SAJA Study

Many immigrant parents struggle with teaching their children their mother tongue while living in an English-speaking country. They often prioritise learning English so that the child does not fall behind in school and society. SAJA Study aims to find a balance between teaching English and Korean for bilingual children with interactive and fun language learning materials.

Project Statement

SAJA (사자) meaning lion.

The project has been inspired by my own childhood and upbringing by my 1st generation Korean immigrant parents, and the struggles of navigating two languages growing up in Australia. As a young child, I remember dreading my own makeshift ‘home-schooling’ lessons where I was taught Hangul- the Korean alphabet. These lessons were boring, unenjoyable, and difficult for my little self, who just wanted to go outside and play.

So, this project stems from the question I began to ponder for similar little Korean children growing up in English-speaking countries (and even for my own future children): How can I make this language learning experience more enjoyable?

An equal balance between education and play, through aesthetics and through function.
